OEM vs ODM: Which Sourcing Model Fits Your Brand?

The difference between manufacturing to your spec and adapting an existing design — and how to choose.

OEM: manufacturing to your spec

With OEM, you provide the design or specification and the factory manufactures to it. You control the details, but you also carry the development work and, usually, the tooling cost.

ODM: adapting an existing design

With ODM, you start from a proven factory design and customize branding, color and packaging. It is faster, cheaper to start, and ideal for testing a new product line before investing in tooling.

Many distributors mix both: ODM for the first batch, OEM once sales justify the investment. We support both models and will help you pick the right one for each product.
